Lord RichardBest Lord Best has been Director of both the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust since 1988. He is President of the Local Government Association and was a member of the Ministerial Sounding Boards, Housing/Local Government 1999-2005.

He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Urban Development and Hon Treasurer for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Homelessness and Housing Need. He also chairs the Giving Forum; is President of the Continuing Care Conference and Chair of the Hanover Housing Association from September 2006. He was Chairman of the Westminster Housing Commission (2006) and has been a Council Member of the Royal Society of Arts since 2004.

Among his previous posts have been: Commissioner, Rural Development Commission (1989-1998); Chair, Inquiry into Social Inclusion in Glasgow (1998-2000); Secretary, Duke of Edinburgh's Inquiry into British Housing (1984-1991). Between 1973 and 1988 he was Director of the National Federation of Housing Associations. He was a member of the Commission on the Future of Birmingham's Council Housing (2002) and chaired the Hull Partnership Liaison Board (2002-2004).

Richard Best was created a Life Peer in 2001.
